Message from the Ambassador of Guatemala

Welcome to the website of the Guatemalan Embassy in Sweden.

Good bilateral relations between our country and Sweden are based on a framework of mutual trust, and especially on the good will of our governments. In recent years, Guatemala has become an important ally of Sweden in Central America, and has managed to specify a dynamic, proactive and congruent work agenda to the Foreign Policy of Guatemala. This is directed by Mr. President Dr. Alejandro Giammattei and is executed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Pedro Brolo, which is sustained under the constitutional principles of Guatemala.

Likewise, the dynamism of the dialogue mechanisms and development cooperation provided by Sweden to Guatemala are tangible and correspond to that daily work and that friendship that has characterized the bilateral relationship between both countries. We will continue to work hard for the benefit of all fellow Guatemalans and to position Guatemala in the correct way, not only in the political sphere, but also in the economic and commercial sphere.

It should be noted that the pandemic caused by COVID-19 has changed the dynamics of work and living, and we must take care of ourselves and follow the recommendations made by local authorities, and thus, be able to overcome this pandemic to meet soon, working with a view to position Guatemala correctly. Remember that we are all Ambassadors of Guatemala abroad.

Finally, we remind you that the Guatemalan Embassy in Sweden, and its Consular section, is open to all Guatemalans.

Best regards,

Georges De La Roche

HISTORY OF THE DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN GUATEMALA AND SWEDEN

The bilateral relations between Guatemala and Sweden date back to 1930. These relations can be described as "very good" since they have been strengthened with mutual benefits to promote economic and social development.

It is also important to mention, as a background to the relations between Guatemala and Sweden, that consular relations between Guatemala and Sweden began in 1880 with the dispatch by King Oscar of Mr. William Triedman as Consul General of Sweden and Norway in Guatemala. In reciprocity, Guatemala established its first Consular mission on October 2, 1883, and in 1894, Fernando Cruz was named Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary of Guatemala in Sweden and Norway residing in France.

Bilateral ties have been strengthened through open and direct dialogue between representatives of government institutions of both countries, with important results in the receipt of development cooperation in favor of Guatemala in the areas of education, health, security and human rights.

The bilateral relationship with Sweden was also strengthened from the perspective of the Central American Integration System, when Sweden was welcomed as an observer country of SICA since December 14, 2018, promoting a regional agenda on issues of democratic security, climate change, prevention disaster, migration, economic integration and institutional strengthening.

Likewise, since the full reopening of the Guatemalan Embassy in January 2021, diplomatic relations between Guatemala and Sweden have evolved to a new level, especially focused on technical cooperation for development and the search for new economic markets in response to the global economic crisis caused by Covid-19.

Currently, the Ambassador of Guatemala in Sweden is Mr. George de La Roche, who presented copies of Style and Letters of Credence to His Excellency María Christina Lundqvist, Chief of Protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on December 4, 2020. That same day , the Ambassador received from His Majesty King Charles XVI Gustav the permission to accredit him as Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Guatemala in Sweden.

The Guatemalan Embassy in Sweden is concurrent for Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania and Norway.
